VIDEO: BloggersLoveLFW Gossip Girl Vlog

Hi Everyone!

Apologies first of all for being absent here & over on twitter. I hope this video explains a little of why I needed to get myself in a better head space before continuing. I didn't want the quality of my posts & videos to be affected.

So here is my vlog of the BloggersLoveLFW Gossip Girl Event. I will be contacting the company involved directly an copying Bloggers Love into the email so that they are aware & can make a decision as to whether they want to work with the brand in the future.

I'm not going to write about the event itself so will leave links to posts of those who have done. If you've written about the event & I've missed your post please do let me know & I'll be sure to add it.
Did you go to the event?

VIDEO: Minimal Makeup For A Brighter Post-Illness Look

Hi Everyone!

I've been quite poorly with a sickness bug. I was well enough to go out with a friend but, because I hadn't eaten much, was still feeling a little on the weak side. My skin was looking dry & my usually dark circles under my eyes were even darker!

I didn't want to pile on the makeup - I didn't have the energy to even if I had wanted to! Instead I chose to use a few key products in strategic places to make me look brighter than I felt!

What are your go to products when you want to look brighter/are feeling poorly?

Maybelline 3 For 2 & New Colour Tattoos!

Hi Everyone!

I'm a huge fan of the Maybelline Colout Tattoos as they are the only cream eyeshadow that doesn't crease on my eyelids! I have the majority of the colours & am rather jealous of those living in the US who have various collections available to them. So imagine my surprise & delight when I walked into Superdrug to find that there are two new shades available!

The first is Chocolate Suede. I was a little concerned that this would be too similar to On And On Bronze, but it has more of a taupe colour to it & is less shimmery.

I also picked up Infinite White. With this one, I was a little nervous that it might be the same as my Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Bikini-tini but it's not even close! The Benefit shadow is creamy in colour - my memory really isn't great!!!

Because it was 3 for 2, I had another product to choose. I have been interested in Maybelline's COLOURsensational Shine Glosses but haven't wanted to get one incase I had an allergic reaction to it. I figured this was the ideal time to try it as I wouldn't be loosing a significant amount of money if it isn't any good for me.

I'm really pleased with these two Colour Tattoos & am excited to try the lip gloss. As I'm taking part in the 30 Days Od Cream Products challenge, I'm thinking of doing a few swatch posts so if this is something you'd be interested in let me know!

Will you be on the look out for these two Colour Tattoos?
What is your favourite colour in the range?

VIDEO: Tutorial | Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette

Hi Everyone!

I recently took part in the 30 Days Of Pigments challenge created by Kristen Marie. I only own one pigment, having got rid of a all my others a number of years ago because I found them too messy.

So I spent the entirety of the month basing my makeup around my Barry M Dazzle Dust. Unfortunately, the brand have scaled down their range of the Dazzle Dusts in favour of nail polish. The one I have is now no longer available.

I found that my Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette had a number of good combinations to compliment my Dazzle Dust & I wanted to share one of these with you all.

Do you use pigments?
What is your favourite look using the Chocolate Bar palette?

Beginners’ Guide To Buying A DSLR – Things To Consider

Hi Everyone!

I am by no means an expert on photography or cameras, but I know an awful lot of questions get asked about what the best camera to buy is. I have just purchased my first (& I’m hoping my only) DSLR, so I thought I’d share my experience with you!

To avoid you all having to read an essay, I thought I’d separate this subject into four posts; ‘Things To Consider’, ‘Where to buy’, ‘My Thoughts On My Camera’ & ‘Accessories’.

I started seriously looking at DSLR cameras about 6 months ago. I went to a number of stores, the two most productive being Currys & Jessops on Oxford Street. I was particularly impressed with the help I received at Currys.

The first thing to decide upon is your budget. When doing this, take into consideration any extras you may need – tripod, memory card, extra battery, camera case, etc., etc. Once you have your budget & your list of accessories that need to come within this (it’s helpful to have a rough idea how much these will come to), you’re ready to start looking at cameras.

This is a good time to think about what you want from your camera – you may already have some ideas!

For me, I wanted the camera to:
  • be light (because of my joints)
  • able to film well (for my YouTube videos)
  • capture moments quickly (as I want the camera to be able to capture a growing family & babies don’t wait around!)
  • be able to perform well in low lighting situations (because of my photosensitivity flash photography is problematic).

Through my research into DSLRs, I learned that I needed the highest possible ISO to get the best images in low light. I also found that I needed to pay attention to shutter speed for quick image capture.

Initially, I thought I wanted a Canon – everyone else is using them, so they must be good. Right? Wrong.

I’m sure Canon’s are great & I’m sure I wouldn’t have any complaints about a Canon, but the Nikon I chose was just that little bit more suitable for me. It took me a while to come to this realisation – that not everyone is the same & we all have different needs!

Something I would totally recommend is to go into a shop & hold the different cameras. Each camera model feels different, regardless of whether they are from the same brand or not. Buttons are usually in a similar place over brands, but a lighter, smaller camera body can mean that some features are omitted. If you can, get a demonstration for the cameras you’re interested in.

So although I came to the realisation that a Canon was not the brand for me, I initially looked at the Canon 1100d (this was the camera I was certain I’d buy, but it’s not being made anymore). This has been replaced by the 1200d, which seemed to me to be more money for not a lot more camera! Canon then came out with the 100d – the weight of this camera was what really appealed to me! I also debated the Canon 700d & it’s Nikon counterpart, the D5300.

Once I’d worked out the three cameras I was interested in, it came down to features. It was when I spoke to a friend with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome about cameras that I felt confident removing the Canon 100d from the equation. This camera lacked the features I wanted & though it is extremely light, the body felt too small & I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get a good enough grip.

This left the Canon 700d & Nikon D5300, both of which have flip screens. The Nikon is lighter & slightly better in terms of low lighting photography & takes 5 frames per second on continuous shooting mode rather than 4. This was something I thought would be useful for catching the first baby moments – set the camera up & leave it to shoot. If I only get one good shot each time, it’ll be worth doing! The Nikon also felt more comfortable in my hands – the body is smaller & the buttons are in a better place for me to reach. I did have to make some compromises. The Canon is slightly better for capturing video, more specifically for the omission of audio during focusing. The display is also touchscreen &, though this is something that isn’t important to me, might be a deciding factor for some.

For me, the small differences weighed in favour of the Nikon D5300. The addition of the built in wifi made the Nikon irresistible, as I can upload directly to my phone & post on my social media!

I really hope this post has been helpful. It took me a long time to work through all the information I needed to make my decision & wanted to share my thought process with you.

What were your priorities for buying your camera (DSLR or otherwise)?

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to share with you some of the products I've been loving in the month of January! Unfortunately some of the footage was not useable - hopefully this will be rectified by the use of my new camera (more to come on that!)!

Do you prefer to see favourites as blog posts, videos or a mix of the two?

Contour Chronicles - NARS Laguna Bronzer

Hi Everyone!

As a fairer skinned girl, I do struggle to find a contour shade that doesn’t pull too orange toned or muddy. So I thought I’d run a Contour Chronicles series along side my Concealer Chronicles. I’ve already posted about MAC Harmony blusher & NYX Taupe blusher. So thought I’d continue the series with a cult classic - NARS Laguna bronzer.

As I’ve already said, I have fair skin but I think, when taking about any skin, undertone is also very important to note. I’ve yellow undertones; so don’t fall into the palest category, which mostly describes those with pinker undertones.

To keep consistency, I’m going to be using my MAC 168 brush on my face & the Real Techniques Duo-Fibe Eye Brush to contour my nose. If I’ve found a brush that I think creates a better result for the product in question I’ll be sure to let you know.

NARS describes Laguna as a ‘Diffused brown powder with golden shimmer’.

This bronzer applies very nicely & has a good amount of pigmentation for contouring – not too much & not too little. I don’t find the ‘golden shimmer’ shows up when the powder is applied to the face. This shade is good for my paler skin – it shows up without looking heavy or unnatural. I also don’t run into the difficulty of being heavy handed & applying too much product by accident! Laguna is a good neutral shade that leans on the warmer side & while I prefer cooler tones for contour – I really like this too!

Products used:
NARS Laguna Bronzer
Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick in No. 1 Warm Ivory
Estee Lauder Disappear Smoothing Crème Concealer in Light
Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder in 01
Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Pink Gold
Eyeshadows from the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette
Soap & Glory Brow Archery in Brownie Points
MUA Clear Mascara as brow gel
Jordana Best Lash Extreme Mascara in Black (top lashes)
MAC MSF in Porcelain Pink
Clinique Quickliner For Lips in No. 40 Neuturally
Clinique Long Last Lipstick in FA Beauty

I don’t know why I prefer a cooler toned contour shade with my warm toned skin! Maybe it’s to do with me also being of a lighter complexion – who knows! I really like Laguna bronzer though!

NARS' Laguna bronzer is £27.50, while the 168 brush & Real Techniques Duo-Fiber Collection are £27 & £23 respectively.

What product(s) & brush(s) do you use to contour with?

#TakeBackWhatsYours - February Update

Hi Everyone!

As we take our first steps into February I thought it was a good time to re-visit my goals for the year to avoid them getting left behind with January.  I laid out my goals in my #TakeBackWhatsYours post & want to see what changes I’ve succeeded in making & what I need to focus on this month.

So…

To reduce my weight
My weight has fluctuated this month between 155-157lb. It seems that my weight is higher when I’m drinking cola. Unfortunately, I’ve been doing this to cope with fatigue & make it through a working day. I took you through my exercise in The 4 Fun Ways I'm Achieving My Exercise Goals post. I was able to cycle so consistently that I felt able to increase my cycle time to 50 minutes. Unfortunately I really struggled the next day & couldn’t manage more than 6 minutes. It could have been because I was feeling particularly groggy! I may try to increase this time again, but will proceed with caution. I got back into the habit of doing the ‘Drop A Size’ workout but that & my yoga practice have fallen by the wayside.

How I’m going to make positive changes to improve this:
Half term is coming up soon so I am aiming to minimise the amount of sugar I consume until then but not put emphasis on how much I weigh – I need to give myself a break! At half term I will, once again, work on taking caffeine & fizz out of my diet. With exercise, I am going to keep consistent with the 25 minute cycling. I am going to get back into my yoga & work on increasing my practice time here, rather than upping my cycle time. I am also going to go back to the ‘Drop A Size’ workout, as I really do feel this improves the way I feel, both about my inner & outer body.

To purchase less makeup & really utilise what I already own
I’m really pleased with how I’ve been doing with this goal! I have purchased just one item of makeup – the NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette. I have been wanting to purchase one of these eyeshadows since they first released so wasn’t going to pass this opportunity up! I have decided to do a 15 in 2015 Project Pan in which I have chosen 15 products that I am going to work on this year to use up! In January I took part in a 30 Days Of Pigments challenge, created by Kristen Marie from SomethingtoConsider1 & am looking forward to this month’s 30 Days Of Creams challenge. This allows me the opportunity to make use of thinks I wouldn’t necessarily think to reach for & helps me make use of all my makeup – not just those that are in my project pan.

How I’m going to make positive changes to improve this:
I have decided that I will set myself a limit of 10 items I can purchase in 2015. This will really make me think about whether I REALLY want a product before purchasing it. By putting a number on my ‘low buy’ it makes it tangible so I know exactly how many/few products I have bought & how many (max) purchases I have left.

To be more organised
I’ve definitely gotten better with this, though it is still a work in progress! My biggest achievement in this area is probably lies with my blog! I had been having problems organising my thoughts & ideas for posts & videos. I was writing them down in a notebook &, while I was ticking things off when I’d done them, ideas at the beginning of the book were getting lost as all I was seeing were the ticked off items. I purchased an A5 spiral bound notebook & have been allowing both sides of the page per idea. Once the post/video has been published, I tear my notes out of the book so I am able to see everything else more clearly.

The purchase of my (£2!) organiser from Wilko has also been extremely helpful in the organisation of my blog. I knew that I was getting muddled with when I had my posts scheduled for, when Twitter chats were being held & when I would be working on my blogs/YouTube channel. I need to take this to the next level now & schedule myself in some time for blog reading (I don’t find I need to schedule time in to watch YouTube videos).

How I’m going to make positive changes to improve this:
I now need to move this organisation into my work & home life. I’m going to create a rough schedule to give myself more structure. Working more on my #ThrowOutThursday series will also help, as it will allow me to get rid of a fair amount of clutter.

To keep a diary – 5-year diary & MyFitnessPal diary
Other than the 2-3 entries in my diary, this has not improved during the past month. I initially moved my diary to the bookshelf but took it upstairs to fill in once & it never returned. My MyFitnessPal entries have been a little more consistent, but not much!

How I’m going to make positive changes to improve this:
I’m going to move my diary back to the bookcase & make a concerted effort to keep my MyFitnessPal accurate & up to date.

I hope you enjoyed this post & it’s given you some ideas if your resolutions or goals have fallen by the wayside a little. These updates are something I will be doing sporadically throughout the year to keep me accountable & focussed on what I want to achieve & how I’m going to do it. Remember – our lives are a journey & it’s never too late to make positive changes to improve them.

Did you make New Years resolutions? How successful have you been with them?

VIDEO: NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette Tutorial

Hi Everyone!

I was lucky enough to get my hands on NARS' new Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette. You can read my latest post, NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette - Overview & Swatches here.

I wanted to use the palette in a tutorial for you all. This is the first time I used the palette so you'll get to hear my initial thoughts of the different shades as I apply them. I chose to use a combination of wet & dry shadows in the look, which I hope you like!

What do you think?
Do you already own some of the Dual Intensity Eyeshadows? If so, which ones?
Is the palette something you'll be picking up or passing on?

NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette - Overview & Swatches

Hi Everyone!

I was lucky enough to be able to get my hands on the NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow palette when it became available on their website. It was released on the Monday & was out of stock by the afternoon. The same thing happened the following day. I was able to order it the Wednesday morning before yet again, it went out of stock. I’m not sure why the palette keeps going in & out of stock, I’m wondering whether it is to try to gain additional hype around the product prior to it’s release on counter.

I’ve wanted to try the Dual Intensity Eyeshadows since they were first released as singles. I stopped myself, as I couldn’t justify the price of £21 for just one shadow. Palettes however, are my thing! I like that, with a palette, you get variety & can (for the most part) create looks without the need for other eyeshadows. When I heard that NARS were releasing a palette of the Dual Intensity Eyeshadows I knew it HAD to be mine!

Priced at £45 (plus £7 for shipping!!!!), the palette contains 6 shadows, each of which contains 0.03oz compared to the 0.05oz of a single shadow. If you were to buy six of the Dual Intensity shadows at 0.03oz it would cost you £75.60 so the palette saves you a massive £30.60!!!! Plus, you get a travel sized #49 brush with the palette for wet & dry application.

The mirrored casing isn’t to my taste - because of my photosensitivity, I have to be careful of reflective surfaces, which will make using this palette less than ideal for me. I'm also less than keen on the way the palette has been put together - the pattern on the middle four shadows forms a square, but the two shadows flanking each side feel to me as though they don't belong. Silly I know, but I feel that the left four shadows & the right four shadows could make two squared patterns. I'm probably overthinking things! I do like that the names of the shadows are printed on the back of the palette, something NARS haven't always done in the past.

Anyway, I thought I’d show you some swatches of the palette, which can be used wet or dry. The palette contains five permanent & one limited edition (Ursa Major) shades.

Dry swatches
Top L-R: Europa, Himalia, Ursa Major (LE), Subra
Bottom L-R: Andromeda, Lysithea, Giove, Syncorax

Top - Dry Swatches L-R: Europa, Himalia, Ursa Major (LE), Subra
Bottom - Wet Swatches L-R: Europa, Himalia, Ursa Major (LE), Subra

Top - Dry Swatches L-R: Andromeda, Lysithea, Giove, Syncorax
Bottom - Wet Swatches: Andromeda, Lysithea, Giove, Syncorax

I did find that, on removing the swatches from my arm with a makeup wipe – what I would normally use to remove my eye makeup, Giove & Sycorax smudged around my arm a bit & took more effort to remove, but certainly nothing to put me off using them!

I’m really excited to have a look for you up on my YouTube channel!

Have you tried the Dual Intensity Eyeshadows? What do you think of them?
Will you be picking up this palette?

Tania Xx
