Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Jelly - Review

Hi Everyone!

So you’ve probably noticed that I’ve curly hair! This seems to have been the result of my taking Sodium Valproate. The curls started when the meds started & got curlier as the does increased! I’m hoping this doesn’t reverse as I come of the Sodium Valproate as I’m just getting the hang of styling my curls! On that note, meet today’s product - the new Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Create A Curl Scrunching Jelly*.

This product is designed to de-frizz & define curls. I struggle with frizz, so was very excited to give this a try! I do think this helped to calm my frizz prone hair & also noticed that my curls were more defined, it surprised me at first as I hadn’t seen them particularly defined since my hair has gotten longer (& so heavier!).

One of the things I really like about this product is that it’s hard to over product your hair. I’m quite heavy handed so this is a huge plus for me! My hair did sometimes look a little ‘wet’, though I don’t know whether this was just because I was looking in the mirror when my hair was wet! The jelly kept my curls defined all day, even in windy weather!

I had a little bit of a panic about three weeks into using the jelly when I read the bottle. I must’ve had a dyslexic moment & misread jelly for gel - the last time I used a gel was not a pretty sight! There is a photo of me that I wanted to include to show you just how bad, but I untagged myself from it on FaceBook & now can't find it (probably a good thing!).

A minute later & I was telling myself not to ‘be so stupid’ - I’d already been loving using product & had great results! That wouldn’t suddenly change by me finding out that it’s a gel (even though it actually isn’t!)! Just a little snippet for you into my very muddy brain!

Here are some pics of me with the jelly defining my curls.

The product has a pleasant, light fragrance & is silicone free. It’s also only £6, a price I was expecting to be higher & can be purchased from Boots.

Have you tried anything from the Curl Friends range?

My Skincare Saviours

Hi Everyone!

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a long time. You might have noticed if you’ve watched some of my empties videos that I very rarely include skincare, haircare and bodycare products. This is because I stick to things I know because of my allergies.

My plan is to have posts on my favourite products from each of these categories that I might be able to link below my empties videos rather than constantly telling you about the same products!

Just as a preface; I have dry, eczema prone skin & a LOT of allergies!

Let’s take these by brand…

My love for La Roche-Posay came about during the period when Clarins were reformulating their HydraQuench moisturiser (£35 for 50ml). It was impossible to get this cream ANYWHERE, so I had to find an alternative. I tried a few things that just didn’t work for me & then stumbled upon the La Roche-Posay Hydraphase line. I picked up the Hydraphase Intensive UV Intensive Light moisturiser (£16.50 for 50ml) & have never looked back! This moisturiser, though thinner in texture does a similar job to the Clarins moisturiser at a fraction of the price!

I’d been on the hunt for an eye cream for a long time. My under eye area gets very dry &, having fallen in love with the Hydraphase moisturiser, it made sense for me to pick up the eye cream (£15 for 15ml) from this line too! Wow, the difference this made to the texture under my eyes & the way my concealer sat was amazing! This cream is good for the eyelid too.

I never felt that my cleanser was quite right. Having had such success with the moisturiser & eye cream, I picked up the Physiological Cleansing Milk (£12 for 200ml), again from the Hydraphase line. This made a big difference to how soft & hydrated my skin felt.

La Roche-Posay can be purchased from Boots stores & Boots.com.

I had enjoyed a Lancome Bi-Facil Makeup Remover sample, but not to the point where I wanted to pay £21.50! I was on the hunt of an alternative & noticed L’Oreal’s Absolute Eye & Lip Makeup Remover, which is also a dual product that requires shaking. I was trying to steer clear of this aspect as the motion of shaking/tilting the bottle causes my hand, wrist & elbow problems. Next to it though was their Gentle Eye Make-up Remover (£3.49 for 125ml). I actually found this remover to be better than Lancome’s offering!

When micellar waters became popular I decided it was a step that I should add in to my routine & went with L’Oreal’s version (£4.99 for 200ml) as I’d gotten on well with their makeup remover. It was also the brand that used the fewest ingredients, making it statistically less likely for me to have a reaction to. I haven’t tried any other micellar waters, which I think goes to show how well I get on with this one!

Each of these products is aimed at those with dry &/or sensitive skin & can be purchased from Boots, Superdrug & most supermarkets.

You may have read all about my issues with makeup wipes & ingredients. If not (& you want to!) you can read all about it here. I’m happy to say that I have finally found some that work for me! These are the Superdrug Cleansing Facial Wipes for Normal Skin (the dry version contains almond oil, a common allergen). These wipes remove my makeup easily without tugging my skin & feel moisturising rather than dry.

These can be purchased from Superdrug.

So there are my everyday skincare products! I’ll have another post/video containing products I use on a weekly basis.

Have you used any of these products? If so, what were/are your thoughts?
What are some of your everyday skincare essentials?

Makeup Revolution Haul

Hi Everyone!

I'm a little late on the bandwagon with Makeup Revolution - I love in a small market town & we only ever get a limited stock of each of the makeup ranges. I didn't pick up the Iconic 1, 2 or 3 as I have the Naked 1, 2 & 3 palettes. When I travelled further afield I picked up on of the Blushing Hearts from the I Heart Makeup line, my first Makeup Revolution product.

I've had my eye on a fair few Makeup Revolution product, but they've all been available only online. Until now.

If you've seen my Primark & Drugstore Haul, you'll know that I got rather excited & snapped up an Iconic Pro 2 palette when I was on my travels. Less than a week later, in my little market town, I found these gems!

I'd had my eyes on the Iconic Pro 1 & 2, particularly since they are supposed to be dupes of the Lorac Pro 1 & 2, which I can't use as they contain citric acid in, which I am allergic to. Having already found the Iconic Pro 2, I became beyond excited at spotting the Iconic Pro 1 & HAD to pick it up! Even better, it was only £6.99!

Makeup Revolution have a Radiance Palette, a dupe for the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. As I already own this I didn't see any point in buying essentially the same thing (though I will be getting it when I've used up my Hourglass one!). Instead I thought I'd get the Highlight Palette - I'm always looking for good highlighters & these three have something different about them, particularly the lilac shade. For £8 for three highlighters, you really can't go wrong!

I'd already picked up the Flawless palette, & when I saw the Beyond Flawless palette beside it I was reminded of MAC's x15 Warm Neutral & x15 Cool Neutral palettes. I plan to review all these products & will be looking into just how similar these two palettes are to MAC's. This palette cost just £8 for 32 eyeshadows!

Now to probably the item I am most excited about - the Ultra Brow Palette in Medium to Dark. I'd seen this palette featured Tea Party Beauty & really liked the look of it! I don't like my brows to pull too warm & one of the things Hayley said in her review was that the shades leant more of cool toned. This (& the price of only £7.99) sold me & Hayley went on to further enable me to pick it up when we got chatting about it on Twitter! That girl is an enabler & I love her for it! I am really excited to start playing with this!

Superdrug had a 3 for 2 offer so I also picked up one of Rimmel's new 'Oh My Gloss!' lip glosses, which I have reviewed here, & I found the Real Techniques Sculpting brush, which I thought I was going to have to miss out on as I'd only seen it in their Collector's Edition Sculpting Set.

With any 3 purchases, Superdrug were also giving away a free makeup bag!

What are your favourite products from Makeup Revolution? I'd love to know what I should be adding to my wish list!

Winter Is Coming...

Hi Everyone!

I realised that it’s been quite a while since I wrote a lifestyle post for you all. I then came across something on the internet (which I will come back to) that I found interesting & inspired me to write today about today’s topic - the return of Game Of Thrones! Game Of Thrones is one of my husband & my favourite shows. We have been watching it religiously since it first aired & eagerly await each episode! I was so excited for the start of season 5 last week (no spoilers for those of you who haven’t yet seen it) & tonight’s episode is just as eagerly anticipated. Dan has already told me one thing that will be happening this series. He listened to the audio books in the car on the way to work & managed to let slip at the end of the ‘Red Wedding’ episode. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you!

This month’s Cosmopolitan featured section on ‘Life Lessons’ from some of the kick-ass women of Game Of Thrones in their ‘The Cheat Sheet - what to watch, read and listen to this month’ article. I know everyone has a favourite character & I mine would have to be mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Deanerys is a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to rule for the best interests of others. She has liberated slaves & has three dragons! Not to mention amazing hair! I am also particularly fond of her lady in waiting, Missandei. This may partly be because she is played by Nathalie Emmanuel who was at school with my sister, but also for her role as counsel to Daenerys - the only woman with this power.

Game of Thrones is known for it’s famous deaths (who’d have known that Ned Stark, one of the primary characters would be killed off in the first series!). As well as the Cosmo piece, I came across an interesting article put together by My Voucher Codes that looks into this in more depth. Spoiler alert - who’d have known that my favourite character, Deanerys Targaryen had the highest number of kills along side ‘King Slayer’, Jamie Lannister! Want to know the most bereaved families? The most used method of disposing of an enemy? Maybe just the overall fatality total? It’s all in this article!

I enjoy the intertwining story lines & the movement form one geographic location to another makes for an interesting watch. The title sequence is superb - Dan can tell exactly which areas the episode will take us! I’m yet to figure it out. The music is very well thought out, from the theme tune to the orchestration & instrumentation used in live music for feasts & celebrations, which are reminiscent of our own musical heritage.

One thing I do find difficult about the Game Of Thrones (& this is probably a dyslexic thing!) is that I confuse a couple of the characters - Tywin & Tyrion Lannister, as well as Sansa Stark & Cerise Lannister (their first names sound like they start with the same letter, confusing my brain!). I have had to ask Dan a few times a season (ok, I’m fibbing - it’s more like a few times an episode!) who is who! Now that Tywin has met his demise & Sansa & Cerise are no longer in the same city, I’m finding it much easier to know who is who!

Have you read the article in Cosmo? What did you think?
Did you guess the death toll correctly? Which has been your favourite death scene?
Dan’s was the death of Prince Oberyn Martell, having his head squished by Gregor Clegane!

Physical Supports Made It Possible...

Hi Everyone!

I’m so sorry I haven’t posted in a while. As you’ve seen from my Exciting Announcement video, I have begun to reduce my medication so Dan & I can try for a baby. We’ve also been on holiday, which you can read about here. Something else happened & that is what I’d like to focus on in this post.

Before Dan & I went on holiday, I took part in a concert with one of the local orchestras. I went to music college to train as an oboist but, because of a shoulder injury I had not been able to play for more than a year - this is the result of my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Hypermobility Type. This was really tough for me & I was initially terrified at the prospect of playing again! As a result, I put off practicing because I was scared to further hurt my shoulder. Once I did pick up my oboe I was only able to play for 5 minutes (rehearsals are 3 hours long, with an additional rehearsal on the morning of the concert!).

My physio suggested me finding something to support my my arm outward. I remembered that my Dad had a support that he had to wear when he had his shoulder operation. He still had it, so I gave it a try! I can’t describe the support properly, so it’s probably best I show you…

This worked really well for playing my oboe, but my part in one of the three pieces included a second instrument - the core anglais. Unfortunately, Dad’s shoulder support wasn’t practical for this as I was unable to reach the reed to play!

My physio was amazing! I turned up with everything in tow! I showed him how the oboe worked with the support but not the core anglais & we worked together to find a solution. We devised a sling that I could use when playing the oboe but take my arm out of to play the core anglais & kept the section of Dad's support that my arm was able to rest on.

For a number of years I have also used a Koiman thumb rest - this is an ergonomic thumb rest that distributes the weight of the instrument across the whole of the thumb, rather than at just one point. Getting this changed my playing ability dramatically, so I thought I would share a few pics of this too!

This allowed me to do something I’d not thought I would be able to do again - to play in a concert. I can’t put into words how thankful I am to my physio!

Things may feel impossible, but you never know what the future holds!

Have you ever received support that’s allowed you to do something you didn’t think possible?

Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Review

Hi Everyone!

I was in Boots the other day, watching their Moisture Renew Lipstick in ‘Back To The Fuscia’ having seen it recommended when I noticed something I’d not seen before on the bottom shelf of the stand.

Rimmel have launched a new line, in the form of their ‘Oh My Gloss!’  lip glosses.

The sales associate I spoke to was lovely. You may know that I have a LOT of allergies. Boots hadn’t received the ingredients card for these lip glosses yet & she went out of her way to help me. I have found that, even after checking ingredients, I can have a reaction so I chose to just pick up one of these glosses - I can always go back for more, right!?!

There are 10 shades in this line & I chose ‘Stay My Rose’. There were no testers, so I went on guess work for this choice & regret it. While there is nothing wrong with this translucent light pink with flecks of golden shimmer in, I prefer more pigmentation from my glosses.

Fast forward a few days & I popped into my local Superdrug to see if they had any testers... They had 3. 2 of these were in 'Stay My Rose' - Not helpful! The other was 'Purrr... Glossy Cat'. I swatched them side by side for you & I have to say, there's not much difference!

I found lots of Makeup Revolution goodies & as Superdrug had a 3 for 2 I picked up 'Twinkle Twinkle'. This shade makes me think of a toned down version of the MAC Viva Glam Miley Cyrus lipgass - a gloss that, while I loved the colour, was VERY sparkly & I knew I'd never wear. This gloss, like 'Stay My Rose' is not as pigmented as it is in the tube. Out of the two, I definitely prefer 'Twinkle Twinkle'.

'Stay My Rose'

'Twinkle Twinkle'

The formula is comfortable to wear without being particularly sticky & is applied with a wand. Rimmel claim this gloss lasts 'up to 6hrs'. NB 'up to' not 'min'. I find this gloss lasts approx. 2hrs, but it's comfortable feeling lasts long after the gloss has worn off the lips. This is probably due to the inclusion of aragon oil & vitamin E. Some of the glitter particles do remain on the lips after the product has worn away & they look more obvious at this point. Something to bear in mind.

I love the design of the packaging, this was probably what caught my eye first. It’s very sleek & reminiscent of the Givenchy Very Irresistible fragrance bottle.

I like this gloss, which costs £5.49 & will definitely be swatching other shades to see if there are some with more pigment in the line. You can purchase these from both Boots & Superdrug.

Have you seen these yet?
What is your favourite lipgloss of all time?

#LipGlam - Review

Hi Everyone!

I was lucky enough to meet the brand #LipGlam at the Bloggers Love Fashion Week event last month.

A story you may, but probably haven't heard me tell is that of the demise of my favourite lip balm, the Anatomicals 'Stop Cracking Up' lip balm at the hands, or rather the paws, of my cat Freya. I took this lip balm everywhere with me as I found it to be unraveled. It was while I was sat on the sofa, lip balm (& cat) on the side table that it happened. Freya likes to bat things about with her paws & decided to take a break from playing with the coasters & instead focus on my lip balm. This game didn't last long on the table before it found its way to the floor. All of a sudden I heard a crash & Freya shot upstairs. The lip balm was nowhere to be found & Freya remained in her basket upstairs for the rest of the day.

So now you know the story of the lip balm. I still am yet to find it despite my husband's & my best efforts to find it. I went to repurchase it but it is no longer stocked in Selfridges stores. You'll now understand my pure delight when I tried the #LipGlam lip balm*.

My first application was not a pleasant one it has to be said, but that was because I applied WAY too much & got a lot of it in my mouth - it doesn't taste nice & leaves a lingering aftertaste. It did however, really moisturise my lips, which were very dry at the time. Subsequent applications were just as impressive.

I found the product to be very 'stiff' to get out of the packaging. My initial thoughts were that this must have been down to the product being new. There are instructions telling you to warm up the tube in hot water for 1 minute if the product is cold or hard. I assumed that this would be something I only needed to do once, particularly as my bedroom is often rather warm. The application of the product warm definitely gives the best results/experience, but isn't practical when out & about. I felt a little disappointed by this, a feeling that quickly passed when I reminded myself that the lip balm works very well regardless!

I found that when I put the #LipGlam lip balm on in the morning before my shower & then cleaned my teeth, there was still a significant amount of product left on my lips!

I am so glad I've finally found something to replace my Anatomicals lip balm! the #LipGlam lip balm can be purchased for £9.99 from BirchboxForever BeauxMagpie Beauty & Avenue22.

Have you tried #LipGlam?
What are your favourite lip balms?
